In detail

Pick the platform that rejected your file and the compressor works backwards from its ceiling: a bitrate, a resolution, and an audio track that add up to less than the limit. It encodes, weighs the result, and re-aims if it overshot, so what lands on your disk is genuinely under the number.

What is Discord's file size limit?

10 MB on the free tier. Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and full Nitro to 500 MB. If you are not paying, 10 MB is the wall, which is why it is the default preset here.

How large a video can I email?

Gmail attachments cap at 25 MB and Outlook at 20 MB. Above that both offer a cloud link instead, which many recipients cannot open at work. Compressing under 20 MB keeps it a plain attachment.

What about WhatsApp and Telegram?

WhatsApp allows 16 MB per video sent as media. Telegram allows 2 GB, so the Telegram preset exists only to stay under its re-encode threshold rather than to shrink anything hard.

Why compress it myself instead of letting the app do it?

Because a platform re-encode is tuned for the platform's storage bill, not for your picture. It is a single blind pass at a fixed bitrate. Compressing to just under the ceiling yourself means you choose the resolution, you keep the audio you want, and the result looks like footage instead of a screenshot of footage.

Will it make my video look terrible?

It tells you first. The plan line shows the resolution and bitrate it intends to use, and warns you when the target is too small for the length of your clip. In that case a shorter cut beats a smaller bitrate every time.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Decoding, encoding, and muxing all run in your browser through WebCodecs. Close the tab and nothing of yours survives anywhere.
