In detail

WhatsApp Status stops a clip at thirty seconds and Instagram Stories at sixty, so a five minute video is not one upload, it is ten, and every one of them has to start exactly where the last one ended. Doing that by hand means trimming the same file ten times and counting in your head. Drop it here instead: pick thirty seconds, or sixty, or a number of equal parts, and every boundary is worked out before anything runs. The parts are cut by copying the packets rather than re-encoding them, which is why a five minute file finishes in seconds and the picture that comes out is the picture that went in. The honest catch is the one every lossless cut has: a copy can only begin on a keyframe, so the parts land at twenty eight to thirty two seconds rather than thirty on the nose. The table shows you every real length before you commit, and there is an exact mode one chip away for the times when it has to be 30.000. Everything arrives as one zip.

    The packets between each pair of cuts are copied straight across, so nothing is decoded, nothing is re-encoded, and a long file finishes in seconds. Because a copy has to begin on a keyframe, the parts come out near your target rather than exactly on it, and the table tells you the real length of every one of them before you press the button.

    One chip switches to a mode that re-encodes so every part starts on the frame you asked for and runs to the second. It costs a generation of quality and real time, and it says both of those things up front instead of after.

  • WhatsApp and Stories presets

    Thirty seconds is the Status cap, sixty is Stories and Shorts, three minutes is a TikTok. They are chips rather than a number you have to remember, and any part that would still come out over the cap is badged in the table so you can fix it before you upload.

  • Up to sixty parts in one zip

    A half hour lecture at thirty seconds a part is sixty files, which is where this stops, because past that a download is a chore rather than a result. The archive is written here in the browser and holds the parts in order, named so they sort correctly in any file manager.

  • The short tail, folded or kept

    A five minute video cut at thirty seconds leaves twelve parts and nothing over, but a five minute four second one leaves a four second runt at the end. Keep it as its own part or fold it into the one before it, which then runs thirty four seconds. The choice appears only when there is a runt to make it about.

Straight answers.

Why are my parts not exactly thirty seconds?

Because a lossless cut can only begin on a keyframe. Most frames in a video are stored as the difference from the frames before them, so they mean nothing on their own; only a keyframe stands by itself, and a copy has to start on one. Cameras and phones write one every one to three seconds, so a boundary aimed at thirty lands on the keyframe at or before it, and the parts come out at roughly twenty eight to thirty two seconds. The table shows the real length of every part before you run anything, and the badge tells you if one would still be over a platform's cap. If you need thirty on the nose, switch to exact and the tool re-encodes to get there.

Will the quality drop when I split a video?

Not in the default mode. The video and audio packets inside each part are copied into a new file without ever being decoded, so the bytes describing your picture are identical to the ones in the source and each part is the same generation as the original. That is also why it is fast: the work is reading and writing rather than looking at pictures. Exact mode is the one exception, because landing on a specific frame means decoding and encoding it again, and it is labelled as a re-encode wherever it appears.

What is the zip, and can I download parts one by one?

The zip is one archive holding every part, so you get a single download instead of ten. It stores the files rather than compressing them, because an MP4 is already compressed and squeezing it again would cost time and save nothing, which means opening the archive is instant on any machine. Every part is also listed on its own in the table with its own download link, so if you only want part three you can take just part three and leave the rest.

Is there a limit on the file or the number of parts?

Sixty parts per split, and no limit on the file you start from. There is no upload, so the size ceiling is your own disk rather than somebody's server: a two gigabyte recording is read where it sits. Sixty is where the part count stops because a download of more than sixty files stops being a convenience, and a part cannot be shorter than a second or longer than an hour. If your video needs more than sixty parts, use a longer part length, or split it in halves first and split each half again.
